"tell me, what kind of problem, or deficiency, have you detected at the sector, or at the discipline? and what will you offer, as remedy?" this was the question that caused allergic reactions all over my organism; and which i had been responding with mere silence. (deficiencies and remedies, eh? too pragmatic!) now it touches me in a rather different way.
well, yes, at first it's a boring question. but as soon as you start to interpret this will for effectiveness not in terms of professional practice, but rather as a kind of effectiveness in academic practices (i.e. publishing), the issue becomes quite touchy.
publishing seems to be the 'raison d'etre' for an academician. and if you want to publish, you have to offer a new and useful bit of knowledge. so first you have to develop that bit of knowledge; hence, the need to ask the above mentioned question from the very beginning of a study.
you get to appreciate the importance of this question better and better, especially when you loose huge amounts of time, effort and motivation; and achieve nothing in the end. too much effort, too much time... i'm not that arrogant anymore. let me be effective and pragmatic.

ben geldim | here i am
i haven't been writing here for the last four months? the research continues as usual, up and down.. again studying without fatigue, again studying with quite a lot of fatigue, hopes again, disappointment again, good and bad news.. the big news is, my study abroad ends and i'm going back.
during the period that i didn't write here, i've entered several areas, starting with pattern recognition, moving forwards to 2D and 3D shape retrieval (and i feel i'm on the right path.) of course i've had to start learning mathematics to be able to understand and even use these techniques. and i've had to study statistics to better evaluate the huge amounts of data that i have started to accumulate. a lot of things to be coded, visualised, tested, written, published, upcoming deadlines.. well i code some stuff then it appears that the calculations were all wrong and i had to debug and revamp, new tests to be written then, a lot of work to be done, deadlines come, deadlines go, and i'm never able to catch them. we are continously moving forward, downloading huge amounts of articles, reading and reading and mapping, then reconsider the projects, uh.
but at least i've produced and visualised the main framework of my project. what i'm doing, and with which methods, is mostly delineated. although the results, i mean success or failure, are by no means certain, obscurities are continously being minimized. i came that far to start thinking about the dissertation text. actually, this thesis cannot finish even with continous study worth three years. but i have to finish it at most in two years. the bells toll and toll, for the researcher. (here the bells ring beatles tunes. i went to see it myself. there's a gothic church tower with formidable stairs (300 steps). i climbed up. you can inspect the old bells and clocks there. i did. they play these popular melodies from time to time. and during the world cup final, i think they rang them at the beginning and end of the game. this dutch churches know publicity affairs pretty well; we (i, the researcher), we don't.
i have created another page for this blog. i was thinking to move on from there, in a more technical and informative manner. but perhaps it's better to continue from here. with all the grief, sorrow, and other stuff.. i'm already academic enough at my studies now. (i don't know the proper exclamation here.)

internet sana sesleniyorum, dünya sen anla | expanding towards an infinite internet
i'm quite happy with my ever enlarging world at the internet. i mean, now i have moved into it, into internet, i've left the earth.
i'm continously working.. differential geometry, statistics, pattern recognition and retrieval, artificial intelligence, popular neuroscience, python programming details and libraries, blender subtleties and scripting api, generative programming or 3d represenation and analysis techniques... all so exciting... i'm continously a starter now, i don't have time to reach adulthood, there's so much to learn and try, no time to attain proficiency and share!
i'm turning into a kind of architect who doesn't turn around and run when it sees integral sign, who's open to bayesian probabilities, and whose hand caresses the keyboard more than the mouse
as the reluctant researcher, my message to the world is: when you follow the paths that feel more interesting to you, that you are more talented at, towards where you show a propensity, then it gets happier, easier, more productive... all work and no fun feels good to me, 'cause the interests of my age group mostly don't appeal to me... what appeals to me is, the issues that i've been working on, producing, trying, cycling, and hanging down the walls...
hence, i became a researcher! surprise... and a series of entries from the very start of this blog, including this one, are demonstrating this transformation... at first it was rather in the form of discontent, now it's embracement and joy.

now i start to remember.. at the beginning there was that book, a pattern language.. i haven't realised the amount of influence this book have had on my design thinking.. i have been thinking in terms of architectural patterns all through this project, since it's inception in the form of a naive sketch in 2006...
correspondence between design games model and pattern language is rather loose, yet, "game" and "tool" items were consciously based on alexander's patterns. and now i've found more usages for patterns. [indeed this concept, pattern, is one of the most handy and versatile concepts ever created... i use it for everything, i mean not only in the guise of architectural patterns...]
design games model was rather abstract (perhaps even superficial). though meaningful as a depiction of our position in design theory, when it comes to practice, i'm not sure if it offered us enough inspiration for advancing beyond that entity-operator pair, which is rather well known in AI history. hence there was a need for intermediary approaches if this research was to arrive at designing systems.
so i came out with the good old 'pattern'! a fairly abstract pattern might be a holistic solution proposal, which delineates, and delimits the universe of possibilities, for a given design brief. in fact i haven't seen many buildings around delft that couldn't be presented as mere adaptations of a number of basic patterns.
then i thought, as if, the task of the philosopher was creating concepts [deleuze asserts this in "what is philosophy"], the task of the architect could have been creating new patterns. patterns and patterns of manipulating and processing those patterns. as an ideal i mean.

this time i went to marcos novak... i mean he came downstairs, so we went and watched. well, he had been producing some interesting stuff... however, the chain of concepts and metaphors, which he had elaborated as if to show that all those what he had been doing had a deep conceptual background, it didn't convince me... it was sort of, simple? i'm not sure if i am able to express why i think this way... perhaps it was a bit too 'architectish?'... think about it, just a few years ago everybody was cheering out loud: "marcoos! marcoos!" today, at that small lecture room, in front of a bunch of students -most of whom didn't seem very much excited... and what he talks about sounds a bit prosaic... i ask, what happened?
i started to think that the scene of architecture seems more similar to turkish pop music of 90's, rather than rock music of 70's [see: design fast and die young].. the guy, novak, dedicated a good portion of his presentation to demonstrate how he was adamant to continuously scan the borders of architecture, transgress those borders and enlarge the perimeter of the discipline, hence he was meant to stay avant-garde forever. what he was trying to say was: look at me, i'm still cool, i'm still on the front line, i'm incessantly importing novelties into architecture from other disciplines and diverting it's usual course with my long lever... yet a strange lacklustre, unsure, hesitant manner was observable in his performance... ('cause he was face to face with his unexcited spectators)
and his anxiety was reasonable... each new bright face rising on the scene talks like: "i came here for staying long, i'm not one of those one-song-stars!", and brings new perceptions, techniques, texts and visualities... that season all the studios shake their hips with that new star, then the next season nobody is interested in that old song any more...
he had got old. in just a few years; marcos novak and his deeds. he was still after novelty, yet all his of his framework was like worn out. it was like that period, that style of understanding had passed, we were already at another position, diverted from his direction. a whole climate abruptly changes and it seems impossible to keep pace.. you are developed in a climate, you developed your techniques, tools, your understanding and your ways of changing at that climate, and that climate is gone, you're invalid now, you're no more cool, and there's no way to reshape yourself to catch the wave again. even if you were dedicated to change forever, like marcos novak... but what about alissa andrasek? wasn't she still new and crunchy? well, yes she was!.. yet we can guess that she will get pale just in a few years..
it's not rock, it's pop, turkish pop! no legends, only ambitious funny starlets. and these people aren't able to die young either; they desperately try to gain youth again via aesthetic operations... there's a huge pressure from below, where huge quantities of youth work to force their ranks upwards, they are new, alert and they are able to sense what is trendy and cool, and what is not at a nanometric sensitivity.
bu mimarlık ortamını 60-70lerin rock müzik ortamından ziyade [bkz. design fast and die young] 90ların türk popu ortamına benzetmeye başladım ben.. markos novak, sunumunun önemli bir kısmını böyle sürekli uçları, sınırları, gezilmemiş görülmemiş alanları araştırmak, dolayısıyla hep avangard kalmak hususundaki düşüncelerine ayırmıştı, böyle şemalar falan yapmış, uzaylar zamanlar boyutlar uçlar arasında gidip geliyor, cidarlar esniyor, genişliyor, çizgiler olağan yollarından saptıkça sapıyor, tüm bu şemalar ölçülü dozlarda neolojizmlerle dekore edilmiş.. söylediği de şu idi, "aman bakın ben nasıl da hala kuulum, hala en önde koşuyorum, sürekli diğer alanlardan acayip şeyler ihraç edip disiplinin yörüngesini saptırıyorum.." tuhaf bir enerjisizlik, bir performansından emin olmama hali, bir tutukluk vardı üzerinde bunları anlatırken... çünkü izleyicilerin suratlarıyla karşı karşıyaydı...
adamın endişesi bence gayet haklıydı... her yeni parlayan yüz "ben kalıcı olmaya geldim, tek şarkılık adam değilim" diye ortama atılıyor, beraberinde yeni yükselişe geçen kavrayışlar, teknikler, görsellik ve metinler getiriyor... bir sezon bütün stüdyolar kalçalarını o elemanla sallıyor, sonra ertesi sezon "ulan ben bu şahsın söylediklerinde ne buldum da tüm yaz haydi eller havaya ha?"

garip ama gerçek | really..
nihayet bu aşamaya geldik.. projemin aslını, kendisini, projesini detaylandırmaya/uygulamaya geçtim... ve detaylandırma süreci kodlama sürecinden tümüyle bağımsız olmuyor.. ikisi bir arada yürüyor. "tasarım oyunları"nın yeni hedefi mimari tasarım. öyle ilüstrasyondu, grafikti, nesneydi şuydu buydu değil... fikirlerim var. valla. tasarım oyunları modelinde bazı noktaları revize etmem gerekti. detaylandırdım diyelim. projemin hedeflerini netleştiriyorum. araştırmacı artık ya başarılı olacak, ya başarısız...
now i have some ideas to start giving a concrete shape to my vague project, and i have started to develop a series of sub-projects, in the field of architectural design.

araştırmacı kış uykusu uyuyor. uyuyanın üstüne kar yağıyor. memleket sürekli kar altındadır. araştırmacının suçu yok bunda. aslında beş dakika boş durmadı. kitaplar, makaleler, konular, kavramlar, tartışmalar güzel. koltuk da güzel. ev sıcak. kahve var. araştırmacı yeni bir harita yapmaya karar verdi (bkz. freemind bkz. vue, kullanınız kullandırınız). bu sefer başka dalgalarda dolanacağız (kkd de katılacak). zihin felsefesi - nörobilim - bilişsel bilimler - bireysel özdeşlik - kendi/benlik - yapay zeka alanlarından ilgili başlıkları, terminoloji açıklamalarını ve tartışmaları bir haritaya yerleştireceğiz. araştırmacı kkd'nin yanına gittiğinde başka bir insana dönüşüyor. kkd'nin kötücül kendine güveni araştırmacıyı etkisine alıyor. allah kimseyi kkd'nin etki alanına sokmasın. araştırmacı oldukça iyimser. beş dakka daha uyuyacak.

neyse ki artık alıştım | getting used to it
they rejected my paper.. it's sad. all of the critics demanded more definitions, more clarity, more details concerning the process, and implicitly, less speculation, more concreteness. and they are right. the text is not clear, it is fiercely bombarded with "quoted phrases" that aren't defined anywhere, it doesn't include enough details, and it seems like it is hiding shortcomings -which is true. i wrote it very fast, the study was immature, there were problems, i wasn't careful, indeeed i was somehow expecting to have time to revise the text, if it was to be accepted... well, ofcourse they were expecting a finished academic text, with possibly minor issues... but, i must admit, i wasn't expecting these real critics at an arts and design conference...
now, i still have to publish... which doesn't feel nice. i have given myself to reading for the last five weeks.. they were asking: "when will we be back at work researcher?" but i was already at work. i was reading. and this could have gone forever. now i have to start producing again. a harder and more serious period of study is awaiting; compared to reading the most exciting texts on earth all day long on my lovely armchair... perhaps we're not ready yet.. perhaps we need a vacation. perhaps we have lost interest... perhaps we don't like researching... perhaps we just want to lay down and read... perhaps our retirement is due. perhaps when we sit down and start working again, all of a sudden, our excitement will return.

meetings fall short. then why all this toil to appoint each other at that specific date? or why leave all the exciting study to write reports and have them "confirmed"? in the researcher's case, communication is not fertile, and this academic type is mere distraction. because during the meetings the researcher effectively eliminates all discussion, and there is a reason to it: it feels that most of these discussions will turn out to be futile attempts at communication.... circular?

frivolous heuristics
but why this rule and not the other?
_some of the heuristics might have resulted from some particular practical expediency, thus might be explained explicitly.
_but the only reason for some of them to be chosen and be adopted so fervently might be just that they are not apparently useless, and that we need some concrete direction to move on; just moving on: an abstract scheme of practicality. you don't calculate every outcome before moving on, you are constantly moving on, so in a way continuously scanning a region of potentialities, and not the other regions, and that's all.
when it comes to architectural design, we have both types of heuristics, but it's hard and sometimes unnecessary to identify, in terms of this distinction, a particular heuristic that we frequently utilize. indeed most of our 'global' heuristics that we express as "i like the idea", or "this doesn't seem right," without explicating the reasoning mechanisms (which most of the time elude us) are quite versatile and multifaceted, in that, they, at one swoop define a whole strategy and direction that enable us to move on. it seems that we have global strategies stored as 'patterns'. we feel/experience them as ideas, feelings, tastes or just frivolity; we like to seem strange sometimes. operating in a world like ours, our computer programs should incorporate frivolity and gratuitousness, this is not to exalt free will, this is practicality.

why automation | niyeotomasyonyaniniyeyani
the question continues to linger (thus asks my temporary supervisor) :
but, why automation?
i usually refrain from giving a direct answer. i give some political explanations reminiscent of the situationists which hold some portion of truth (yea automation might be good, my argument through dishwasher). and point towards growing academic and economic interests (more and more intelligent-design-software will flood the market).
but indeed, though vaguely, i can discern why; why this fascination with artificial intelligence, computation, perception, cognitive science, consciousness; why this eagerness to imitate a portion of human behavior which is allegedly a peculiarity of the human being (i.e design activity).
it is just an assault towards the last fortress defending against complete disenchantment. nothing is special about human mind. indeed there is nothing special about anything. this is the researcher as positivist and nihilist. (two in one? don't go too far researcher!)

i was heralding a massive forage into evolutionary art. but, though there might be some ideas deserving attention there, i couldn't find them yet. nevertheless i learned how they have developed some artistic photoshop filters and with what kinds of mathematical expressions they created all those ugly evo-paintings. i'll try some of them together with design games. there's this book, which is somehow interesting:
The Art of Artificial Evolution: A Handbook on Evolutionary Art and Music
by Juan Romero and Penousal Machado (Editors), 2007
includes a few nice articles worth reading.
and this article, which summarizes useful technical details:
Toward Greater Artistic Control for Interactive Evolution of Images and Animation
david a. hart, 2009
when it comes to the basic mechanism/technique, we still seem to stay roughly at the point where karl sims initiated this line of entertainment (so go first to sims himself). it's like, these artists found a new type of painting technique (like oil painting) and will be using it without questioning, just with minor improvements for a few centuries. but sims himself doesn't do that. a different mindset.

fitness function | design games'in form grafiği
let's start to think about design process, as if it is a problem solving activity, what kind of problem solving is it?
>one question is, can we ever have a kind of evaluation function for a design problem, so that all the constraints and criteria are brought together on one level and be pronounced/calculated?
_a variant of above question is: can we produce a series of evaluation functions, that are organized hierarchically, yet still comparable?
0404010:
now i have preliminary answers:
>we might consider several types of evaluation approaches:
1. define rules, constraints and definite targets, and check the proposal in terms of compliance to these,
2. define performance, and optimize parameters in terms of a fitness function,
3. define patterns and features, then measure a proposal's similarity with these
the latter two are easily applicable as knowledge lean approaches in evaluation stages. the first type is also important, but not enough, if we want to "drag" the population towards a solution. nevertheless we should use the first type as well, at definite stages.
i will concentrate on the third option, which seems to be mostly omitted (if not altogether). patterns and features will be derived from existing designs. however this approach doesn't seem sufficient, for attaining full-fledged design solutions which are fine enough to compete with human-designed ones. it should be followed by optimisation processes and supported by constraint checks and resulting corrections.

öteki de şimdilerde göz atmaya başladığım "how to solve it: modern heuristics"(mihayleviçz ve fogel)... şimdi yazacağım not "problem çözme"yle ilgili...

mary lou maher writes in a kind of short introductory text somewhere about AI in the large and AI in the small. she seems to say, it all started with huge ideas in an all-encompassing manner (which in a way, mostly failed), but now it turned into a series of partial and modest patches here and there... if there is an AI in the small, there's an automation-in-the-small as well. and design games is just one of the modest, transient and sometimes not-so-meaningful patches. and i have a new phrase as a substitution to 'design automation', it's 'artificial design'.
[0404010:] i also want to add a note about this phrase: "AI complete"
[wikipedia:]
"In the field of artificial intelligence, the most difficult problems are informally known as AI-complete or AI-hard, implying that the difficulty of these computational problems is equivalent to solving the central artificial intelligence problem—making computers as intelligent as people, or strong AI."
i have been thinking about "task-decomposition" since i've started this project four years ago. design games model was an abstract thinking about sub-tasks of architecture [and "the star-map of architecture" which we had produced as "sanki-dikdörtgen" was strongly related]
now, some sub-tasks in a particular architectural design process are rather mechanical (some even trivial) and can be solved through some calculation (if necessary use well known AI techniques and algorithms), and there are some others, which include a huge set of parameters, objectives, and constraints, that renders them practically impossible to solve; i mean, if you approach them through Good Old Fashioned Artificial Intelligence paradigm (i.e. GOFAI, compare with "sub-symbolic" approaches, which includes evolutionary computation).
these latter types of subtasks are still being researched (as a few examples: distribution of the masses, building orientation, floor plan generation, envelope shape and aperture formation, or complete conceptual formal design in an integrated fashion). but this line of research is still rather underdeveloped, from a designer's point of view. nevertheless there's great hope, 'cause existing techniques seem to be offering several possibilities.
however there is also a third type of sub-tasks, which have to be tackled for a convincing design solution to appear. these include the conceptual (or say, mostly verbal) brief generation and problem setting stages, where the designers need extensive understanding of every aspect of culture as well as a complete ability to understand and manipulate shapes and objects (at least as well as human beings do). a creative and sensitive design proposal which is in dialogue with it's cultural, political, economic, and historical context, doesn't seem to be attainable with mere adaptation or pre-defined rules or constraints or as a result of a mostly random evolution.
are we obliged to wait for a machine, at least as clever as human mind (i.e. for strong-AI program to be accomplished) before entrusting design activity altogether to the machines?

the explosion in the laboratory | patladı
i was thinking that i was at the end of my focused-literature-research. so that i could expand towards a larger wave. and my extensive mapping seemed to me to be pretty complete; except one minor task. so i went on to that task. but it expanded, or rather, exploded. that particular area on my mapping was indeed quite loaded. that's evolutionary art. i think i will be posting on that topic during the following period.
it all started with a conference call (1), a few months ago. i had to respond to that call because the 'unit' wanted me to do some publishing (2) and i was feeling indebted (3). i responded with a project which combined several titles (4) and details (5) of my research, as well as some preparations for several prospective projects (6) that i was intending to follow after my phd! (7) (yea, the researcher always has plans, to study some stuff in the long term; i.e. it always postpones a lot of interesting projects.) hence the first prototype of design games which produces graphics (8) (i mean, graphics in a way). but there was a last, unproven graphic task of aslıhan for design games, it was 'the waves commission' (9) i was studying polinomials (10), conic sections (11) and elliptic curves (12) to carry out that task. and there exploded the evolutionary art section (13). i will, for sure, be scrutinizing the area for some time, for sheer joy of it (14). but what i want to say is, above i only indexed the very basic steps (narrated some steps in a discontinuous manner) of an ongoing design process (or research?)(or both?)(or no difference? difference but not that big? (feyerabend?)), and it will yield some results, or not (it can yield interesting results but this is not the issue), we could go on to fill minor steps in between the basic steps. and here the researcher wants to ask: how many steps, how many rather simple ingredients, and also how many types of steps, are needed for a full-fledged design process? or research? or a creative process in general? and what kinds of knowing, reasoning, calculating functioning, transforming or producing systems should be included in a design system?

evolvers
for those, who would like to see a demonstration of the power of artificial evolution, here are several interactive evolutionary systems on the net:
a-biomorph, imitates the seminal "biomorph" system of richard dawkins, which was an inspiration for most of the interactive systems generated afterwards. but following systems are also influenced by karl sims' work based on mathematical expressions. image breeder seems to be evolving patterns that are formed by simple algorithms, so that the jumps between generations are rather abrupt (but i liked its images). there is this living image project, where you can vote on evolutions for pictures. picbreeder evolves pictures, in a way similar to the living image, but these look like 'something'. e-volver is an interactive-experiment-exhibition (so we can't get involved via internet i suppose), the images produced are rather complex and varied. there's also breed, it evolves three dimensional shapes and produces them using a 3d printer. there's more: evolve (what a surprising name), this one distributes source code.. [and also there's a whole domain concerning 'artificial life', which has a lot to do with other seminal work of sims, but i won't go into that one now.]
most of these systems utilize algorithms or mathematical expressions that yield a color value for a given canvas coordinate, thus define a picture pixel by pixel. these mathematical expressions [like: "grayness = y*sin(x)"] have the peculiar property of producing those regularities like curves, lines and subtle gradients (think about sinusoidal waves). starting with these expressions, systems continue by combining or modifying those expressions, so that children images carry some similarity to the initial patterns, but are different. it's easy to say that, you should rather have worked with a parametric approach in a more-straightforwardly-global-sense; if you wanted more control over the process (remember bitmap-vectoral pair here), like the animators do. that way you could go on manipulating an object and return to the original if you liked.
after all, we don't need these examples to be convinced about the power of artificial evolution. we eat products of artificial evolution everyday, and we feed them, and we read them and we think through them. evolutionary computation approach, therefore, is an attempt to have more control on this ongoing process and use the mechanism to obtain specifically-oriented (task-specific) and relevant (or useful) products, and much faster. indeed we need to know the amount of time needed to carry out each task.

we will not be the slaves of decadent automation
a researcher asked a professor: does a proposal have double life?
professor said: even.
someone related this to nizu.
nizu observed: the primordial soup transmitted through the screen.
the researcher sees dead proposals everywhere. born-dead. but here it asks: what happen to the dead proposals after they are stripped bare from original intentions and context by their bachelors?
