why did you become, in these last weeks, this much of a gossiping, sinister and paranoiac person?
a. you caught an opportunity to emancipate yourself from your numbed captivity at the school, and now, in order to conserve the acceleration that will set you free from gravity, you try to preserve this mood.
b. finally there is action at the institution and amongst the people, but you understand that this motion is temporary, and more resolute phase is numbness. in order to get the most from this active phase you unknowingly try to extend the period of tension.
c. they stepped over your tail at the school, you felt that someone could hinder you at your pursuits, (they just don't open the door of the back-room, they don't give you the mouse,) you want to reach out to some goals, through some sources, and you confront feelings like indebtedness, expectation, uneasiness, will and fear. these feelings make you ordinary, base, and little.
d. you are turning into an academician.
[as a last note from the cat: "sssssssssssssssssssz"]

araştırmacı ve kedisi | the researcher and his cat

what happens if a researcher's cat gets sexually excited, after eating her morning meal?
a. with this last stroke, loosing his temper, the researcher sets himself free towards asia.
b. the researcher is calm, 'cause the cat is milder than ever and actually there are no more any duties with tight deadlines, he makes fun of the cat.
c. the researcher is so merry and so relieved, that, he could have spent his time to a rubbish newspaper, and now he is just unable to decide which of his enjoying occupations would be done first.
d. the researcher remembers his last saturday. indeed this saturday and the former one are basically the same, in terms of the quantity of the jobs done, but the difference between the amounts of relief is unmeasurable.

[the researcher will not kill the cat, just give her away]

yeni paket | a new package

i'm relieved. i could finally wipe out the dirt accumulated in my mind. there were things that could be finished. in fact a work package completely ended. and i withdrew my efforts from a graduate course. how much space it invaded in my head! when some of the duties ended, or shifted stage, a considerable amount of space was emancipated in my mind... new work, postponed work, ignored work, or following work finally could find opportunity to appear in my head. i find myself with the enthusiasm of a new package. and suddenly i remembered my birthday, it has been veiled by occupation. i said, let's do something, i remembered my friends. it's like coming back from a long journey. one more thing, i realized that i can play ping pong now; every so often.

one of our students didn't come to studio (i have called all of the absent students today one by one from my cell phone, but no one knew this one's number), at the same time, at course hours, he wrote: "go on boy, no one can stop you!" as a reply to the following manifesto on our studio blog. now, on the one hand i agree with him according to the manifesto, because i find it rather unbelieveable, too; what was that anyway? i believe that the studio is somewhere like this, it is the wish, but talking like the studio is the most magnificient place on earth is ridiculous. besides why would i care about the studio? why about design? and on the other hand, the manifesto verifies itself, studio is something that the students perform, and we are amongst the participants. if this guy does not create his personal experience for himself, studio will not happen for him. the process, for most of the time, depends on a sincere participation. perhaps this is the reason why studio practice can not live with such a disrespect, or indifference... insincerity and indifference cripple the studio.

the studio to be contagious (please):

we would like to express, that, our exercises towards using the corridors and the hallways for the aims of communication and for activities are by no means "haphazard" and "gratuitous", and that, our sentimentality regarding this issue arises from the air that circulates through the studio, and that, this air is being inhaled by many "activists":
_the studio is not a lesson-space where the roles of the tutors and the students are strictly separated, but is the collaborative production itself where the roles are constantly being re-defined
_production of the studio is not the things/pieces, but experiences. means of this production is experiment, work, thinking, reading, fun, movement, organisation, exhibition, publishing.
_the studio can not fit into the classroom. it expands towards the school via corridors and hallways, to the city via city-spaces, and by any means of publishing -first of all the internet- to the whole world. it does not own any particular space, it is all of the school-city-world. and in taskisla, best communication platform and the best activity space is the corridors and the hallways.
_exhibition, publishing, internet site, party, activiy etc. communication media is shaped due to the nature of the current experiment and in the conditions of the studio. it is against the style of activity of the studio, to try to squeeze these inside pre-formulated "general" rules, or inside "neat" cases.
_the studio is already expanded, and will continue expanding.

boşluk | vacuity

boşluğa düşsem artık,
işlerin apansız bir bitişi yüzünden..

let me fall into vacuity,
because of an abrubt cessation of work..

asla çalışma | never work

i get sleepy before 1 am, however i need my mind for an additional 3 hours. i have no time left for the preparation of my most serious scholarship application file. no, nothing left. but what did i do? i got up at 16 pm today. it's true. and there is no reason to it. i mean, i didn't sleep late, i wasn't sleepless from before, and it is not because of unhappiness... just endless lying and stretching, that was the reason. then an additional hour for the breakfast and the other things... but now my eyelids are closing down. most probably my soul doesn't want to work and it manipulates my body through subconscious processes. it means i wasn't absolutely successful in killing myself. there's a ghost in the machine. one of my friends honoured herself for being the most hardworking researcher, then i will be the nominee for the next year. never work. never. guzz..

tebdil-i mekan | place change

it's just like if i don't stay here, if i leave here abruptly, at the place where i arrive, concentration will be waiting for me. it's a dream world where i could shift from one occupation to another whenever i halt and where i won't even have a minute's break (but still i will be sleeping eight hours a day); alice's world of mirrors.
(so i still hope to find the hole)

birbirlerini ağırlayan keyifli insanlar | nice people entertaining each other

i went to an exhibition opening, where everybody knew everybody else, and where a rather shallow collection of works was a pretext of social gathering. one side of mine says: "that's it, never work!"; and another side: "work hard, you can't stand this much of superficiality", and this might be true, the only thing that makes you content, in these days, is a substantial production; to whose production, or consumption you participate.

boş geçmeyelim | don't miss it

içten yanmalı asistanlar varmış diye duydum,
içten sıkılmalı, hafakanlar basmalı...
sıkıntıları işaretlemek lazım,
anıtlarla.
bin musibetten bin üretim,
küçüklü büyüklü,
iş olsun diye.

i've heard that there are research assistants, who burn inside out, who are troubled from inside, who are to palpitate from inside... there's a need to commemorate troubles, with monuments. a thousand productions, via a thousand calamities; some small some huge, just for there to be something.

ne zaman ve nerde | when and where

it is absolutely atrocious, to occupy a man with duties, who's already reluctant, with an irrelevant issue that lasts for 2,5 hours! (i want you to dieeee!) ah! scaring that timid concentration bug! to cause it to go away... oh, when will it come out from its secret hole again?

it has to come out; i'll be waiting for it, during the following 72 hours, at my home...

kurumsal tarihimiz | our institutional history

metnin anlamlı olup olmadığı hususunda şüpheye düştüm:

"bürokratik süreçler insana kurumlarla ilişkisinin tarihini tekrar tekrar yazdırıyor. hangi kurumlarla, hangi dönemlerde, hangi sıfatlarla, hangi ekonomik ilişkiler bağlamında biraradaydın... kurumlar şunlar: şirketler, devlet daireleri, okullar, kurslar, enstitüler, hastaneler, valilikler, muhtarlıklar, askerlik şubeleri, konsolosluklar, bankalar ve hocalar. onlar sana neler verdiler onu belgelemen gerekiyor. senin liyakatini de bu kurumlar değerlendiriyorlar: 'bizden bunu bunu almıştır ve şu kadar başarılı sayıyoruz'. hep alıyormuş gibisin. neler verdiğini öğrenmek isteyen pek yok?"

19 Şubat 2009 Perşembe

iğneyi de başkalarına... | the needle for the others...

it wasn't all in vain, that you were odd, it has a story; it wasn't for nothing, that you were bad tempered, it was an expression of precautions; your being irritating is not for nothing, they sometimes deserve it; your feeling alone is not with a reason, you are alone with your beliefs and desires; although by the time you have forgotten, the day you had decided to do this and that, in this and that way, you had had reasons, they are still valid; your stubbornness was not all in vain, occurences remind you; it is not surprising, that you create 'this much of storms in these little ponds', it is about longing.

ne onlarla ne onlarsız | neither with them, nor without

you should work alone; in order for you to exhaust neither yourself, nor the others. that's right. but when alone, you have to be content with projects that are more limited.

when working alone, your are the one who sets the plans, who tells or does not tell, you communicate to yourself, so you're ok with less writing-conversating. you are the one who sets the level, and who lays the horizon. it's relieving for sure. but at the same time this means less feed-back, less innovation, less production and much simpler output. when you're alone you are much less restricted, even you're unbridled, however, in fact there operates a rather impoverished creativity. hence you try to imitate teamwork by yourself, through expanding the processes over long periods!!

it seems, for a convincing production, it is necessary to wrestle through obstacles, misunderstandings and resistances.

çalışmam da lazım | i should work

there's a reason that i am writing here about almost everything, but my academic research or my studies. how can i concentrate on those, while i am totally immersed, in terms of work hours and also mentally, in everything else?

one day one of our students told us: "this studio stole my dreams from me!.." :]

...this recent series of incidents gave me back, my dreams and my personality. i confess, i hadn't left my dreams for these occupations. when for some specific reason, i had been in a transitional state, where i was ready to forsake them, i had had to submit myself to my job; seeking to a large extent different ends. it was tactical, believe it or not. and it was a success, but to an extent. and that extension had a limit. we were there then. i mean.. i mean these occurences seem to have saved me. perhaps, this is why i grabbed this opportunity with this much of rage.

now, an ironic shift occurs about the mean delight that you acquired through constantly disclosing your arguable belief that in this milieu there was no real place for authentic intellectual attitude, subtlety, production, or communication. the only strategy to proceed through intellectualistic attitudes was doing it, without arguing with anyone. there was a detritus of uncertainty, that an intellectual could exploit for his/her interests. indeed, no practical professional needs thorough intellectual understanding, subtlety, search or occupation; neither architects, nor academicians; but when they do a bit of creative work as advertisers, maybe... then, they get rid of all the intellectual and critical attitudes, when there's an expedient situation. they would be happier with true academicians, and with professional tutors of architecture; as shallow and simple as themselves.

hesaplaşmalar no:197 | account nr: 197

once you were in seclusion somewhere in a castle. then you got to believe that there was a nice atmosphere in corridors and halls, in studios and classrooms, in meeting rooms and courtyards, even in the rooms of the academicians. you raised your head, and abruptly joined what was going on, and with all your being. your friends, while gossiping, told you that, "no one here wanted to cooperate with the others", they said, "here someone have obtained something through being somebody's (wo)men", there were friends who were saying, "somebody whom you like, likes 'the whites' a lot", and it was true, and this was their mistake, definitely, and some said for some people that you didn't like that they were "small and ambitious" and you knew other ambitious but insufficient professors, that you liked personally.

yes you preferred not to hear. you had a distant acquaintance with everyone, full of respect. you hadn't seen
by your eyes, most of what was told, and you were glad. you needed the people around to be good, nice and truthful, and hoped that they were. as long as you were distant the tale continued. and you felt yourself spotlessly clean. you were a discrete and impartial judge, and were quite generous. everybody were nice, in this or that way. this was the fantasy.

their insufficiencies were usual. professors that could not profess, academicians that wrote rubbish just for the sake of doing something were usual. the parrots who opened their beak to say "geek", unfortunately beginning to sing "awareness" were usual in this island. the ones who deemed themselves very clever, but who couldn't utter any meaningful phrase before struggling through a sequence of nonsensical paragraphs were usual. the ones who boasted to be very openminded but in fact who were the wrestler of the narrowest perspectives were usual. everything was acceptable. things happened to be like this here. and being this way, it served nice opportunities. you could do anything here. no one would interfere. here was the place that you could try out the newest. 'cause there was no one standing in front of you. everything was disordered. no one had the time, or interest to see another. and you, extracted from your preliminary formalistic character, a man flexible enough to operate through this mentality.

now, you are hurrying to be the first to leave the building; at least mentally. no surprise. you knew everything. but you just have ignored it, with an enameled dirt-repellency, and a magnanimous indulgence. no one was perfect, you neither. here might have been the most perfect of all of the probable academic universes. nice sides of the building souldn't have been forgotten. and here was the place where your chaise longue was cute.

ok. you took and gave what you were to take and give. your account is okay. you don't feel indebted, for you didn't get much from here, but a piece of spare time, and some breezes of spring. you didn't get from here more than what you would get if you were somewhere else. that's the right way to calculate your bill, thinking "if i had been investing my time somewhere else"... i may be a little bit on the positive. still, i have invested my time well.

işe dönüş | back

bunlar söylendikte,
hayaller temizlenmiş, taraflar belirlenmiş (gerekirse bütün diğerlerinden ayrı olarak ben), yaşam ortamım ve olağan geleceğim gözden çıkarılmışken, yeni bir çerçeve oluşuyor. olayların akışı hemen değişmeyecek. şimdi bürokratik işlemlere dönüş yapalım. işlerimizi yürütelim. sonuçlar orta vadede ortaya çıkıyor.

these all said,
dreams clenaed up, sides set (in case, i, distinct from all the others), and while i'm ready to give up my biological environment and my usual future, a new framework starts to appear. "flow of things" will not change "from now to tomorrow". now it's time to return back to bureucracy. and i have work to do. consequences begin to appear in intermediate-terms.

turnusol | litmus

there are times, like litmus paper. when you want to be distinct, from the others; the ones you don't want to be by their side, morally. they are after so miniscule interests, with so miniscule personalities. so you attempt to distinguish yourself, by establishing hitherto unnoticed sides. the sides are, possibly, you, and all the others. you are ready to give up here.

senindir | all yours

evet tek başına bırakırlar.. herhalde sen aşırısındır, sen tuhafsındır, sen yanlışsındır, sen şunu dikkate almamışsındır, sen onları dinlememişsindir, sen onları korkutmuşsundur, sen onların üstüne gitmişsindir, sen sen sen, sen yapmışsındır ya da yapamamışsındır.. işin sorumluluğunu almakta da tek başına bulursun kendini, senin suçundur, senin eksikliğindir, sen istemektesindir, o şeyi isteyen tek kişi ve gerçekleşmemesindeki tek sorumlu olarak sen kalırsın, "senindir" derler eline bırakırlar..

yeş, they leave you alone.. most probably you are excessive, you are strange, you are wrong, you didn't pay attention to this, you didn't listen to them, you scared them, you beleaguered them, you you you, you dit it, or you couldn't.. you find yourself alone, also in taking responsibility of affairs, it is your fault, your defect, it's you that asked for it, you are the only person who desired that thing to happen, and you find yourself as the sole person who is responsible for failure. "it is yours" they say, and leave it to you.

temenniler | good intentions

like my professor used to say: now you are daunted and you're withdrawn, and then you forget and move forward after your enthusiasms. i have been thinking about my professor's position. i look at him, still rushing into unbridled undertakings, more interesting than all of what we are attempting... and how he is alone. there used to be his wife, they were partners in everything. but then they were occupying somewhere more reasonable for sure. now he only has got talented disciples. we were working together with him last year, for the first year design studio... it was an inspiring experience on some aspects. currently we are working as a different team, but constantly reconsidering those aspects.

in short, the others can only be apprentices. each person may only be a disciple. either these kinds of people don't accomodate apprentices, or "partners" don't get along together with these kinds of people. there are only disciples or apprentices to work with.

i ask myself, what would i do, what will i do? is it the right place to try to produce something enthusiastic? it seemed to be. but there is no one, who is visionary here; what's here is only slackness, i understand it now.

no! i don't want to stay here. this ordinariness, this timidity, this sidewayspatrolling, these barren minds, these stupefied little (wo)men... you can not carry this huge mass, this academic unit, this overweight, big calfed, somehow both cheerful and sheepish widow, from here to anywhere... it creeps in its own timid trajectory. and there are no two sides here, where one is the positive and the other negative. there are only professionals who acquire life power from mediocrity: professional architects, professional academicians, professional architectural design tutors... professional timid dimwits. and a bunch of good will, many compliments.

beş dakika zeka arası, temizlik vakti | five minutes mind break, time to clean up

attan inip eşeğe binenler | the ones, that come off the horse, for a donkey

... /... gelemeyen davet mektupları, karara bağlanamayan araştırma projeleri, ucuza harcanan atölye fikirleri, verilen dilekçeler, verilemeyen dilekçeler, yazılamayan çalışma planları, olunamayan konsantrasyonlar, bitirilemeyen/başlanamayan yazılar, birbiri ardından devrilen ilham verici kitaplar, iyi başlayan dersler, öğrenciler için hazırlanan güzel okuma-yazma paketleri, beklenmedik başarı yakalayan işler, başarıyla devredilen görevler, bulunamayan proje partnerleri .../...

... /... un-coming letters of invitations, un-decidable research projects, good ideas turned over cheap, submitted petitions, unsubmittable petitions, un-writable research plans, unattainable concentrations, unfinished/unstarted texts, inspiring books that are one by one read, courses that are well commenced, good reading-writing packages that are prepared for students, affairs that attained unexpected success, unfound project partners .../...

they are all going together...
actually, there is no problem. it flows itself...
but you're once damaged, and once restored.
better said, sometimes you are badly ruined; by the others; whom you owe -at least- 1/3 of every success; 'cause they don't do, what you expect from them... perhaps their share is much more than 1/3. perhaps luck has a smaller percentage...
hence you remain on half way.

and for nothing is ever finished, for everything is spread out onto medium-term, a constant and tense expectance.

paketlenmiş hayaller | wrapped up dreams

in the beginning there was consciousness. you knew it, your position in this milieu was quite shaky. you had plainly calculated your chances. besides, you weren't part of this institution. whenever you were bored, whenever things got hard, you were re-adjusting your tune; you occasionally took out your plans of a great-escape, you were always ready to attack (you were always alert, always on defense)

then you said, "great escape mreat escape", and adopted your researcher identity. actually you were everything but researcher, yet, it was how things went in your discipline and you were content. you had a satisfying job, and gradually accelerated your pace. though you weren't resistant to difficulties, you could get on anyhow. you would get used to working.

then you are caught. you get to define yourself with these works. you
even start trying to overlay your shadow personality, whom you're passionately in love with, onto this veiling personality, and merge them. this much of unconsciousness... yes you're right, youth ends, together with the dreams..

ok, whatever, you're in.

then one day they say they would most probably dismiss you (from your biological environment) and instead employ those almond mustached conservatives. the dean says it. so? so you already knew it; with your usual omniscience, which works best with calamities. and you had already disclosed it almost everywhere. you had already considered the chances, they could have rocked you to make you sleep, you had already foreseen the consequences. but still, when it comes out, as a serious probability, it gets you down: is it this that i threw my dreams for?

so you seek and find your dreams again from some closet, they're somehow worn out, and pale, but still neetly working. those people can throw my proto-academic personality to anywhere they want. i have great journeys to go.

pis akademik | fucking academics

(aynı kaydı bir de şöyle yazayım dedim:)

heveslerin bittiği yerde mi başladı,
akademik?

academics: did it start, where the enthusiasms have ended?

zombi akademisyen adayı | the zombi or the prospective academician

her şanslı müslüman babasının mezarına iner. her ikbal vaadeden akademisyen önce kendi mezarına mı iner?

i understand it, these happened concurrently... when all the enthusiasm, on all the other areas of life goes down, comes up academic intensity... inversely proportionate, are these two.

this is marriage, getting to be ambitious, getting older, or a journey down to level minus 140. every lucky muslim descends down to his fathers tomb, and every prosperous academician down to his own?

bahar, güz ve akademik | spring, autumn, and the academic

ilkbaharın her türü (yalancısı, sahicisi, kısası, ikincisi ve olası diğer) akademik çalışmanın düşmanıdır.

ama sonbahar? sonbahar öyle mi?

every kinds of spring (the true, the illusory, the short, the second, the wet and possible others) is an arch-enemy of the academic study.

but the autumn? oh, the autumn.

elimden geleni yaptım. bekliyorum şimdi.

i did what i could.
waiting i am.

throwing dices (is it the nature of academic initiative?)(good luck)

sahipsiz cephaneler | abandoned ammunition

first, i left the complainings, at some street, in a little package.
now, to a garbage can, i'm leaving 197 pieces of "i have too many things to do" type ammunition...
in a moment of panic, i threw away, all the subterranian munitions that i was in charge of.
no more coups. it's like there is flow.
getting old...
one more step, towards being one of those academicians, whom i had been watching with bewilderment...
